Thursday, 1/14: Read your independent reading book for 20 minutes.  Fill out your reading log.  If you lost your reading log, create one on loose leaf paper. Study for Author's Perspective Quiz that is tomorrow.

Wednesday, 1/13: Read your independent reading book for 20 minutes.  Fill out your reading log.  If you lost your reading log, create one on loose leaf paper. Study for Author's Perspective Quiz that is Friday.  You need to know how to define author's perspective in your own words without using the phrase point of view, you need to know the 4 things to look at when identifying the author's perspective, and you need to be able to read an article and be able to identify the author's perspective.

Friday, 12/11: Make sure your rough draft is on one paper and your hamburger graphic organizer is complete. Both will be checked for a class work grade on Monday.

Thursday, 12/10: Make sure your class work is finished.

Wednesday, 12/9: Make sure your class work is finished.

Tuesday, 12/8: 1) Complete hamburger graphic organizer for body paragraph #2.  Transfer the paragraph from the hamburger to lined paper.

Monday, 12/7: 1) Complete hamburger graphic organizer for body paragraph #1.  Transfer the paragraph from the hamburger to lined paper.

Thursday, 12/3: Finish introduction paragraph that was started in class.

Tuesday, 11/24: Select a topic you feel passionately about for a persuasive essay.  You must consider a couple of things before deciding on a particular topic. First, what kind of supporting evidence do you think you can come up with for this topic?  Second, what are the people who may be opposed (against) your viewpoint going to say?  Can you think of what you would say back to them?  If you can't think of anything to say back to them, it may not be the best topic to select.

Internet Assignment: Pick a website to research a topic (pick a topic).  Using your graphic organizer you created in your journal, apply each of the questions described in the BrainPop video to determine whether the site is a trustworthy source of information. (1. Who is the publisher?, 2. Who is the author-are they well-known and/or qualified to talk about the topic?, 3. In-Depth-does the site have a lot of facts and statistics?, 4. Up-To-Date-was the website updated or created recently?, 5. Accurate-is the information on the website correct?-cross-check the information on that website with another website, 6. Is the website biased?-are they showing favor to one side?)    Due Tuesday, 11/24/09 Be sure to write down the URL of the website you used!

Friday, 11/13: Answer the following question: What did you notice about the language used by the author in this book? How does it reflect the community itself?
(I'm not talking about the type of language. I'm talking about how they speak and how they use the language. Think about whether they use sarcasm, slang, precision of language, euphemisms and figuarative vs. literal language.)

Monday, 8/31: Write a set of "standard apologies" for 2 student transgressions found in this Language Arts class at Combs Middle School. Remember: A transgression is when someone does something wrong or a rule is broken. For example: In The Giver, the standard apology for being late to class is "I apologize for inconveniencing my learning community."

Friday, 8/28: Complete rough drafts of short story that we have been working on for the last 2 class periods.

Tuesday, 8/25: Finish the characterization assignment that was started in class.
